Ingredients:
2 medium onions
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 large egg
¾ cup buttermilk
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Cooking spray
Directions:
Prepare the Onions:
Peel the onions and cut off the top and bottom. Slice the onion into 4-5 sections, ensuring you leave the root end intact to hold the petals together. Gently separate the onion petals.
Prepare the Breading:
In a shallow dish, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. In another shallow dish, whisk the egg and buttermilk together. In a third shallow dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese.
Coat the Onions:
Dip each onion into the flour mixture, coating it well. Then dip it into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated, and finally coat it with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to ensure it sticks.
Air Fry the Onions:
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the prepared onions in the air fryer basket, making sure the petals are fanned out. Spray the onions lightly with cooking spray.
Cook the Blooming Onions:
Air fry the onions for 12-15 minutes, or until golden and crispy. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer. Flip halfway through for even crispness.
Serve:
Carefully remove the blooming onions from the air fryer and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch or spicy ketchup.
