Ingredients:
– 3 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 packet active dry yeast
– 1/4 cup sugar
– 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
– 2 large eggs
– 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
– Powdered sugar for dusting
– Oil for frying
Instructions:
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add in the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
3. Mix until a dough forms. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut out circles using a cookie cutter or glass (about 3 inches in diameter).
6. Place a teaspoon of chocolate hazelnut spread in the center of half the circles. Top each filled circle with another dough circle and pinch the edges to seal.
7. Let the filled Berliners rise for another 30 minutes on a floured surface until puffy.
8. While they rise, heat oil in a deep frying pan to 350°F (175°C).
9. Fry the Berliners in batches until they are golden brown on each side, about 2-3 minutes per side.
10. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
